The final meet of the World Athletics Indoor Tour took place in Madrid on Wednesday, and American Grant Holloway made the most of the race, breaking the indoor 60m hurdles world record with a time of 7.29 seconds. Holloway’s record was the highlight of the meet, but there were several other impressive runs in Spain, including a big result in the 3,000m from Gudaf Tsegay.

Holloway’s record run

Holloway has had an incredible indoor season, winning the 60mH at all five meets he entered. Coming into this season, he was already the American record holder in the 60mH with a PB of 7.35 seconds. He matched that record at the first American Track League meet in Arkansas, then lowered it a couple of weeks later at a meet in France, where he ran 7.32.

He ran 7.32 seconds once again on Wednesday in the heats before improving his PB to 7.29 in the 60mH final. His time beat the previous world record by 0.01, bettering the mark set by Great Britain’s Colin Jackson in 1994 (three years before Holloway was born).

Another big result for Tsegay

Tsegay is another athlete wrapping up a phenomenal indoor season. She kicked February off with a world indoor record in the 1,500m when she ran 3:53.09 at a meet in France. Less than a week later at another French meet, she set the Ethiopian indoor 800m record, posting a time of 1:57.52. Finally, she stormed to the win on Wednesday in the 3,000m in Madrid, beating the second-place runner by over six seconds and stopping the clock in 8:22.65.

This is not only Tsegay’s third PB in her third indoor race of the year, but it is also the second-fastest indoor 3,000m of all time. She now sits behind fellow Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba, who owns the world record of 8:16.60.

Barega’s perfect season

Tsegay’s compatriot Selemon Barega has also been on a tear to start 2021. In five races, he has four wins, including a perfect record in the 1,500m. He won his third 1,500m race of the year on Wednesday, grabbing the win in 3:35.42.
