Hofbauer and Gollish win Canadian Half-Marathon Championships

Trevor Hofbauer and Sasha Gollish are your Canadian Half-Marathon Champions. Hofbauer and Gollish broke the tape in 1:08:25 and 1:14:19 respectively Sunday morning in Calgary.

Hofbauer recently moved back to his hometown of Calgary, Alta. from Guelph, Ont. where he was training with Speed River Track Club. Hofbauer said on his blog that, “I enjoyed Guelph, but it’s not home.” Evidently, his move west has served him well, as he was the decisive winner today at the Canadian Championships. While 1:08:25 is four minutes off his personal best of 1:04:28, a championship race is more about tactics than time. 

Bernard Onsare of Calgary, Alberta was the second man across the line in a time of 1:10:27.

Gollish was the women’s winner on Sunday in Calgary. Gollish has been dominant on the roads this year, finishing 30th at the Half-Marathon World Championships in March, and was the first Canadian across the line in that race.

After the World Championships, Gollish ran a tune-up race at the Banque Scotia 21K de Montreal where she won as well. Gollish was a favourite to win today and didn’t disappoint. Gollish commented after the race that, “It was a great battle out there with Dayna today. It was a challenging course; hills, bridges, underpasses, turns, heat and some altitude. It was a great day to test your mental fortitude.”

Dayna Pidhoresky of Vancouver, B.C. was the second-place finisher in 1:14:42.
