Athletes will be striving to achieve word championship standards today at the Harry Jerome Classic, Canada’s longest running track and field event. World standards must be met by June 26 for athletes hoping to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Oregon later this summer. Fans at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C., will not be disappointed, as the star-studded line-up for the evening will surely turn out some exciting results.

This year is the 38th anniversary of the Classic and is part of Athletics Canada National Track and Field Tour. The tour is a newly launched series of 10 events with the goal of providing more high-level competition for Canadian athletes at home and attracting international competitors.

Who to watch

The women’s 800m, starting at 7:30 p.m. local time (10:30 p.m. ET), has a thrilling field, with Lucia Stafford competing against Maddy Kelly, Laurence Côté, and American Rebecca Mehra. Stafford and Kelly both ran at Portland Track Festival on the weekend, with Kelly running a PB in 1:59.71.

In the men’s 800m at 7:24 p.m. (10:24 p.m. ET), University of Victoria athlete Vaughn Taylor will be hoping for a win ahead of next-ranked Australia’s Charlie Hunter and American Daniel Nixon. Canadians Robert Heppenstall and Abduhalli Hassan round out a competitive top five.

Both the women’s and the men’s 1,500m events are highly anticipated, with over 21 athletes in the women’s event with a PB of 4:20 or faster. A stacked men’s 1,500m field also has 12 athletes (including seven Canadians) who have run 3:40 or faster. Stafford and Côté will be lining up again in the women’s 1,500m at 8:26 p.m. (11:26 p.m. ET), along with fellow Canadian Natalia Hawthorn and top-ranked Marta Freitas of Portugal.

Green is followed closely by Canadians Robert Heppenstall and Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, both of whom ran well at Portland Track Festival. in a recent social media post, Philibert-Thiboutot called the HJC the “best track meet in Canada” and touted Vancouver as his favourite city in the world.
