Ilana Dupont breaks T53 wheelchair 200m and 400m Canadian records

Ilana Dupont of Clarenceville, Quebec broke her own Canadian T53 wheelchair 200m and 400m records on Sunday

Ilana Dupont of Clarenceville, Quebec broke her own Canadian T53 wheelchair 200m and 400m records on Sunday. 

Dupont crossed the finish line in 31.16 for the 200m, and 57.62 for the 400m. Dupont’s previously held records were  31.27 for the 200m and 58.42 for the 400m, both set in 2016. 

Dupont was paralyzed in a horseback riding incident in 2000, and began training for track events in 2005. Dupont made a national team in her first year of competition. 

Dupont is an IPC World Championship, Paralympic, and Parapan Am Games medalist. Dupont also currently holds the T53 wheelchair 100m Canadian record.

Para-sport athletes are grouped by the degree of activity limitation resulting from their impairment. The T53 classification includes people with spinal cord injuries. Athletes in this classification have full use of their arms, but limited trunk function. 

Ilana Dupont is married to fellow Canadian Paralympian Alex Dupont. The couple competed at a combined seven events at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
