Jordan Hasay drops out of Boston Marathon due to heel injury

Last-minute withdrawal by third-place finisher in 2017 leaves Flanagan, Linden and Huddle to battle for laurels

26-year-old Jordan Hasay has dropped out of the Boston marathon due to a heel injury, the official marathon sponsor John Hancock announced via Twitter at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Hasay underwent an MRI yesterday that revealed the “stress reaction,” which may be related to the plantar fasciitis she was dealing with earlier in the year, though she had been training well in preparation for the marathon and was thought to be healthy.

Hasay made her marathon debut at Boston in 2017, finishing third and running the fastest first marathon by an American woman (2:23:00). She placed third at the Chicago marathon later the same year, shaving more than two minutes off her time, and was one of four American women considered to have a strong chance of winning in Boston this year (the others being Shalane Flanagan, Desiree Linden, and Molly Huddle).

The elite women’s race gets under way at 9:32 a.m. today.
