Ontario man runs Toronto Waterfront Marathon dressed as Gord Downie
Joseph Reid played Tragically Hip music through speakers he carried for the entirety of the Oct. 22 Toronto Waterfront Marathon
Less than a week after The Tragically Hip lead singer and lyricist Gord Downie passed away, Ontario runner Joseph Reid completed the 2017 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in honour of the musician.
Dressed as Downie himself, Reid completed the marathon in 4:21:37 wearing a hat with feathers, a scarf, metallic pants and a Jaws T-shirt, all while carrying an acoustic guitar. Downie died on Oct. 17 at the age of 53 from brain cancer.

Reid completed the marathon in 2016 as well, and according to his website, did both “with no training.” The ‘Run for Gord Downie‘ came together last summer and the attire is based on Downie’s from the Man Machine Poem tour, according to Huffington Post Canada. “It was like having Gord Downie on my left shoulder while I ran,” Reid says.
The Napanee, Ont. man attached speakers to the guitar and played Tragically Hip music throughout the Oct. 22 race, which Reid did to raise funds for the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund.
