New Brunswick’s Julie McGivery, eight months pregnant, runs 2017 Boston Marathon

With a new addition to the family expected soon, Moncton, N.B.’s Julie McGivery, who completed the Boston Marathon on Monday, and her husband already have a middle name in mind: Boston.

McGivery, who is eight months pregnant, finished the world’s most famous road race in a little less than seven hours. She told CBC News that she found out she was pregnant with her second child on the same day as being accepted to the 2017 Boston Marathon. Runners must hit time standards based on their sex and age if they want to be eligible for entry through standard registration. She was able to hit the 3:35:00 time standard for the 18-34 age group, putting her in the third of four corrals at the start line, when initially qualifying.

McGivery told Information Morning – Moncton that Boston was a bucket list item ever since she started running. “I can’t count out how many times people yelled ‘Go Mama’ or ‘You’re an inspiration,'” she says. With approximately 5K to go, she took a seat at a medical tent checkpoint. After a brief break, she persevered to finish the remaining portion of the race. Conditions were particularly tough on Monday as temperatures were warm by ideal marathon standards.

As she finished past the official time cut-off for the Boston Marathon, her name doesn’t appear in the final results. However, she was able to complete the full 42.2K course which begins in Hopkinton, Mass. and finishes on Boylston Street in downtown Boston.

“My husband has agreed that, maybe, the child’s middle name can be Boston, so that someday they’ll say, ‘Why is this my middle name?’ and I can tell them the story,” the 36-year-old told CBC News. The physiotherapist, who was a team therapist at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, does not know whether they’re expecting a boy or a girl.

The 121st Boston Marathon also marked the 50-year anniversary of women’s running pioneer Kathrine Switzer becoming the first woman to run the iconic road race with an official bib.
