Just in time for December: Canada’s best Christmas-themed running events

With December just days away, here are some of Canada's best Christmas-themed running events to wrap up 2015.

Toronto Speedo Run
Folks wearing minimal lycra take to the streets of Toronto for the Santa Speedo Run.

Thinking about getting in one final race before the calendar rolls over to 2016? We have you covered with some of the best Christmas-themed races in Canada, just in time for the holidays.

Santa 5K Shuffle – Dec. 5 (Across Canada)

Santa Shuffle 5K
The most popular of the Santa-themed events, the Santa 5K Shuffle will take place on Dec. 5 in 41 cities across Canada from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. Over 16,000 participants run the annual race, with the 2014 edition raising $600,000 for the Salvation Army.

Santa Speedo Run – Dec. 12 (Toronto)

Whereas many races require a full Santa costume, this race is the exact opposite with runners sporting underwear-equivalent attire. All you need is a red, white or green Speedo-style bathing suit, perfect for winter temperatures in the Ontario capital.

Since 2005, the run has raised over $285,000 for the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children.

This is Canada’s original all-Santa race with registration covering the cost of a Santa outfit.

The race also had editions in Montreal and Hamilton, Ont., but happened in mid-November, being an early trend-setter for the Santa races in December.

The Big Elf Run – Dec. 20 (Vancouver)

Runners tour picturesque Stanley Park in downtown Vancouver before finishing at Winter Wonderland Park. Added “Elfcentives”: Hot chocolate is available at all water stations plus there’s an after party (included with registration).
