Del Grande was less than a second off the world record, which would have been the 10th on her already lengthy resume

Toronto masters runner Karla Del Grande put on a show at Friday’s 310 Running track meet in Bolton, Ont. Running in the W65 category, Del Grande added to her already incredible masters resume with a national record in the 300m hurdles. She crossed the line in 54.70, which was more than 10 seconds faster than the previous Canadian W65 record and less than a second off the world record. Del Grande is no stranger to big results, and she has been among Canada’s most dominant masters athletes over the past decade, amassing multiple national and world records in her athletics career.

As of Friday, Del Grande has 12 outdoor national track records. She also has a ridiculous 17 national indoor records, ranging from her time in the W45 category to today as she competes in the W65 age group. On the world stage, she has five outdoor and four indoor records. She runs a wide breadth of races, with records in events as short as the 50m up to the 400m.

In Bolton, Del Grande came so close to adding a sixth outdoor world record to her name (which would have been her 10th world best overall), finishing just behind the W65 300mH record of 54.06, which was set by Australian athlete Marge Alison in 2011. The previous Canadian record of 1:05.40, which  Rhona Trott set in 2014, was doomed to fall as soon as Del Grande started her run, and she ultimately smashed it by more than 10 seconds.

Earlier this year, Del Grande was named the NCCMA (North American, Central American and Caribbean Masters Athletics) Athlete of the Year, and after her performance over the weekend, she showed the track community why that was the case. It’s safe to say that no sprinting record is safe if it’s on Del Grande’s radar, and now that she has come so close to the 300mH best, it could just be a matter of time before she lowers that time, too.
