Kieran Lumb runs second-fastest Canadian indoor mile time
The Canadian came within 0.08 seconds of the record
Photo by: Kevin MorrisSeveral Canadians were in action at Boston University’s Last Chance Indoor Qualifier on Sunday. Kieran Lumb led the way for the Canadian men, running a PB in the mile, coming within milliseconds of the Canadian indoor record.
He was followed by Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, who set two Quebec records in a single race, and Aaron Ahl, Lumb’s University of Washington teammate, who also set a mile PB. Jazz Shukla won the women’s 800m, and her time is the fastest Canadian time so far in 2023.

The mile
Lumb has had a tremendous season already, and it’s only the end of February. In January, he ran a University of Washington record and world-leading time in the 3,000m, with a 7:43.27 performance. A couple of weeks later, he ran a mile PB of 3:53.83 to join seven other UW runners who posted sub-four-minute results in the same race. On Sunday, Lumb continued his show of impressive results as he ran a blazing 3:52.62 for sixth place in the men’s mile. Lumb’s result was just shy of Cameron Proceviat‘s Canadian indoor mile record of 3:52.54, a time that Proceviat ran on the same Boston University track in 2022.
Philibert-Thiboutot was just a few seconds behind Lumb in the men’s mile, stopping the clock in 3:55.28. This lowered Philibert-Thiboutot’s previous best by 0.05 seconds, and it set a new Quebec provincial record. That was Philibert-Thiboutot’s second record of the night, as he set the Quebec indoor 1,500m record in the same race, clocking a 3:38.79. Finishing less than a second after Philibert-Thiboutot was Ahl, who ran 3:55.60, bettering his previous PB (which he ran in Boston in 2022) by two seconds.

Shukla’s Canadian lead
In the women’s 800m, Shukla ran 2:01.00 to win by close to one second. According to her World Athletics profile, this is a massive PB, with her previous indoor best sitting at 2:05.86, which she ran back in 2017. Her time is also the fastest time by a Canadian woman so far this year, beating the second-best time in 2023 by more than two seconds. As Shukla noted on Instagram, the Boston University Last Chance meet marked the end of her indoor season, but with such a quick result, she’ll have plenty of momentum to ride into the start of outdoor racing.
