Lucia Stafford breaks Gabriela DeBues-Stafford’s U23 national record

Stafford ran a 4:10.22 to finish third in the deep field, breaking her older sister's national U23 1,500m record

Over the weekend, both Gabriela and younger sister Lucia Stafford raced on different sides of the world. DeBues-Stafford raced in Glasgow, running a huge 800m indoor personal best of 2:00.96 (a Canadian leading time), and hours later her younger sister broke her U23 national 1,500m record in Boston.

Stafford ran a 4:10.22 to finish third in the deep field. In that same race, Cory McGee won in a huge indoor PB of 4:04. She was paced by her Team Boss teammates Emma Coburn and Aisha Praught-Leer.

Stafford’s time places her first U Sports (which means she’s run the fastest time in the league) in the 1,500m by a whopping 14 seconds. The runner is very happy with her execution on Saturday. “Even though the winner ran six seconds faster (McGee, who finished in 4:04), I felt like I was in it with her. Committing to the race plan and sticking with her felt really cool. I was dialed in. With 600m to go, I was super focused. Instead of getting scared I committed to running that lap as fast as possible. I want to give it everything I could.”

Up next for the sisters is the Millrose Games for Gabriela and the BU Valentine Invitational for Lucia. Both sisters are hoping to earn a spot on the 2020 Canadian Olympic squad.
