One of Eastern Canada's most popular road races was held on Friday and Saturday as Maritime Race Weekend hosted runners in the Halifax area.

It was good times in the Maritimes this weekend as runners of all abilities took on Maritime Race Weekend in Nova Scotia. The Sunset 5K was held on Friday before an additional 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon were held early Saturday. Some brave runners did the double and ran back-to-back sessions in the evening and morning.

Whatever distance runners took on, chances are that they took home some treasure in the form of pirate-themed race medals. Lots of runners dress up for the one-of-a-kind event, which celebrated its fifth anniversary this year.

The race took place in Eastern Passage, N.S., a community of Halifax located on the Atlantic Ocean, which offers pristine views of the water and features a scenic course.

Runners who complete a Friday and Saturday event earn three medals: one for each of the individual events plus a Tartan Twosome medal celebrating the two-race accomplishment. The post-race party is also one of the weekend highlights as there are fireworks on Friday and the Pirate Jamboree on Saturday. One lucky runner from the jamboree will win lifetime registration to Maritime Race Weekend.

Notable performances from Friday and Saturday include Denise Robson winning both the Sunset 5K and Coastal 10K in the women’s division. Dave Nevitt too did the Sunset 5K on Friday and went on to win the Classic Marathon this morning in an impressive double totalling more than 45K. Mathieu Rocheleau won both the Sunset 5K on Friday and the Sunrise 5K on Saturday.

Canadian Running was on scene for the event. See some of our photos below showcasing the awesome experience at Maritime Race Weekend as well as photos from other runners who posted to Instagram using the hashtag #MaritimeRaceWeekend.
