Canada’s Brandon McBride, 23, will race the 800m at the 38th Golden Gala Rome Diamond League meet.
McBride was sixth at this event last year, went on to win the Canadian championships in Ottawa in July, and ran a season’s best 1:44.41 in Monaco.

He opened this year’s outdoor season with a fifth-place showing at Shanghai Diamond League, in 1:45.78. Earlier this month he was first at the Boost Boston Games, in 1:45.18, setting a new meet record. All eyes will be on him this afternoon to see how close he comes to breaking Gary Reed’s Canadian record of 1:43.68.

Torontonian Crystal Emmanuel is also competing today in the women’s 200m, at 3:25 p.m. ET. She was fifth at the Commonwealth Games in April, in a season’s best 22.7 seconds.
