Canada’s Brandon McBride was fourth in the 800m at Rome Golden Gala Diamond League meet today, but with an excellent time of 1:44.99, 19 hundredths of a second faster than his winning time at the Boost Boston Games earlier this month. McBride is slowly creeping up on the Canadian record (1:43.68) with each race this outdoor season.

Kenya’s Wycliffe Kenyamal won the race in 1:44.65, followed by fellow countryman Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich (1:44.74) and Jonathan Kitilit, also of Kenya, in third (1:44.78).

The Netherlands’ Bram Som led through the first lap but pulled up short and left the race in the second lap. At this point McBride was in third place, which he held til the final few metres, at which point Rotich moved up from behind, moving ahead of both McBride and Kitilit.

Crystal Emmanuel of Scarborough, Ont. raced the women’s 200m today, with a fifth-place finish and a time of 23.08 seconds. This was only her second time racing the distance this season, after running 22.70 at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in March.
