Mike Tate wins 5,000m Canadian championship
This is Tate's second national championship in as many tries; he won the Canadian cross-country championships in 2019

2019 national cross-country champion Mike Tate of London, Ont. bagged another national championship tonight in Montreal at the Athletics Canada track and field championships, where he won the 5,000m in difficult conditions in 14:15.93. Justin Kent of Vancouver led for much of the race, ultimately finishing second, in 14:16.17. Conor Black, also of London, Ont., was third, in 14:17.87.

The race started in pouring rain, which did let up during the race, but the wet, windy conditions made it a relatively slow race. Kent took the lead for the early laps, then let the others take over the work at the front. At the bell, Black was leading, but Kent passed on the inside to retake the lead. But ultimately he was unable to fend off Tate’s kick in the final 100m.
