The National Beer Mile circuit made a stop in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday attracting more than 2,000 people for the four-beer, four-lap race.

National Beer Mile

More than 2,000 people were in Buffalo, N.Y. to take part in the city’s stop on the National Beer Mile circuit on Saturday. The beer mile is four laps of a 400m track with a beer to begin each lap.

The National Beer Mile is a circuit of races across the United States. There are no stops in Canada though the nation has arguably the best beer mile team in the world. Lewis Kent of London, Ont. is the men’s world record holder in the event having run 4:47 at the FloTrack Beer Mile World Championships in 2015.

Winners at each event on tour win a beer mile belt rather than a trophy. In addition to the race, each stop on the circuit includes an open bar after-party, live music and other activities. The events are exclusive to those aged 21 and older as that’s the minimum drinking age in the United States.

American Erin O’Mara holds the women’s world record in the beer mile (6:08).

A bus (which was organized in part by Kent) full of Canadians from southern Ontario made the trip to the event. Phil Parrot-Migas, Kent’s training partner, also made the trip and recently became the third fastest Canadian beer miler of all-time. A sub-five for men and sub-seven finish for women are times considered to be elite for beer milers.

Lianne Girard, a member of Canada’s beer mile team, won the women’s event. Parrot-Migas was the top finisher besides Kent in the men’s category.

Kent is an ambassador for the series and signed a multi-year deal that could pay him in the six figures if the tour continues to thrive. He’s currently sponsored by Brooks in addition to his National Beer Mile deal.

The beer mile world classic is being held in London, England on July 31. San Francisco hosted the event last year and Canada is expected to field a full team again at this year’s event. The London race will be the first time the world classic is held overseas.
