Following the announcement that the Olympics will be postponed until July 2021, World Athletics said the 2021 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Ore., will also be pushed back a year, to 2022. The Commonwealth Games and European Championships having already been scheduled for the summer of 2022, it was important to find dates for the world championships that did not conflict, and today World Athletics announced they would be held from July 15 to 24.

The 2021 world championships were set to be held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, which has been under reconstruction since the summer of 2018 and is scheduled to be ready for action later this year. The 2021 world championships were going to be the world’s introduction to the newly-renovated stadium, but we’re going to have to wait another year to see the world’s best gather at Hayward Field. There will, of course, be events held there prior to 2022, but none as big as the world championships.
Other events in 2022
World Athletics’ first priority was to move out of the way of the Olympics when it became clear Tokyo 2020 would become Tokyo 2021. The second priority was, if possible, to reschedule for dates that would not affect other major events in 2022, like the Commonwealth Games and European Championships.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, U.K., from July 27 to August 7. Just a few days after that on August 11, the European Championships in Munich, Germany, will start and run until August 21. With the World Athletics Championships starting on July 15 and ending on July 24, this gives athletes the opportunity to compete in up to three championships in the summer of 2022 (assuming their countries compete in the Commonwealth Games and/or European Championships). Canadians will be able to compete at the worlds and Commonwealth Games.
