When you thought you’d seen it all: on Sunday, an ultrarunner from Dunedin, N.Z., Glenn Sutton, ran his local marathon dressed as a giant beer can. Sutton finished the marathon in six hours and 12 minutes.

The homemade beer can weighed about 45 lb., which made it tough to carry around for 42.2 kilometres. Surprisingly, Sutton did not come last (he finished third-last).

Emerson’s Brewery was the proud sponsor of the Dunedin Marathon, which saw nearly 2,000 competitors run the glorious streets of sunny Dunedin on Sunday.

Sutton said the idea behind his unique costume was to have some fun and support the running industry after a couple of tough pandemic years.

He also said in a Facebook post that he was blown over by strong winds during the race, taking a roll with 5 km to go.

“There was no damage to me, but the can was dented and is in need of minor repairs,” wrote Sutton.

In May 2021, Sutton completed a 600 km nonstop run between Milford Sound and Mount Cook to raise money for charity.

Sutton ran for 101 hours straight and raised over NZ $20,000 for his local community hospice.
