Nova Scotia shooting victims’ families to benefit from virtual 5K

How runners can support victims of the NS shooting with their daily run

In the wake of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia on April 18 and 19 that left 22 people dead, Luke MacDonald from Aerobics First in Halifax and his friend, Jody Mattie, have organized a virtual 5K to benefit the victims’ families.

The My Home Course 5K can be run from May 8 through May 10, from your doorstep, and runners across Canada are encouraged to participate. All proceeds will go to a special fund administered by the Municipality of Colchester to directly support the families. Mattie, who’s from Turo, NS, about 20K from Portapique, says that the community has been hit hard by this tragedy: “Because the events encompassed such a large area and they’re such small communities, it’s impossible to not know someone who was impacted.”

Mattie, MacDonald and their friends have been doing the ‘My Home Course 5K’ for several years. It started as a group run from MacDonald’s house to raise money for a charity of the group’s choosing. Since COVID-19, the group can’t meet in person, so they’d started running together virtually. Now they’re inviting Canada’s running community to join them.
