After being forced to settle for the runner-up spot at last year’s TCS New York City Marathon, Kenya’s Hellen Obiri returned to the top in Central Park on Sunday, setting a new course record. Obiri broke the tape in 2:19:51, shattering the longstanding course record of 2:22:31, set by Margaret Okayo in 2003; she also took home the US$50,000 course record bonus with her race title.

Compatriots Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkiriui, who both ran with Obiri for the majority of the race, took second and third in 2:20:07 and 2:20:24. Together, the trio, referred to as the “big three,” have won all the TCS NYC Marathon titles since 2022; throughout the race, the women displayed exemplary camaraderie, communication and teamwork, despite ultimately being competitors.
Fiona O’Keeffe was the top American, taking fourth overall in 2:22:49 and taking 18 seconds off the previous best time by an American; the athlete put up a fight to stick with the leaders, closing a gap in the early second half of the race before falling back again.
Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, chasing the honour of becoming the first woman in history to win four different Abbott World Marathon Majors, fought to hold onto the lead pack but fell off the pace around the 19-mile (30-km) mark. She finished sixth, in 2:24:43.
