Meb Keflezighi retires after finishing the New York City Marathon
The 42-year-old American retires as one of the most decorated long-distance runners of this time
American Meb Keflezighi said farewell to the marathon on Sunday in New York City.
Racing his final competitive marathon, the 26th of his career, the 42-year-old finished 11th at the New York City Marathon in 2:15:29. It just so happens that the length of a marathon, in kilometres, is Keflezighi’s age while his career number of marathons is the number of miles in the race.
Keflezighi retires as the only man to have won an Olympic marathon medal, New York City Marathon and Boston Marathon title. He wads greeted by his family, including his mother, at the finish line in Central Park at the end of the world’s largest marathon.
Keflezighi started his marathon career in New York City in 2002 and won the event in 2009. He won Olympic silver in 2004 and won Boston in 2014, the year after the Boston Marathon bombings.
