Ontario is home to one of the largest high school cross-country meets in North America, with many of Canada’s top runners having gone through the system. Running connoisseur George Aitkin offers his rundown of some of the notable performances of the past in the featured slideshow, including those of Olympians Kevin Sullivan, Dylan Wykes and Nate Brannen.

This year’s race

This year’s championships will be held in Port Hope, Ont. on Saturday.

OFSAA, the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations, Cross-Country Championships is expected to host as many as 1,700 athletes on Nov. 5. The provincial high school cross-country championships will attract thousands more as spectators, coaches, volunteers and officials will be on site to support up-and-coming runners.

High school runners qualified for the provincial championships by virtue of placing well at their regional races. The top two teams, plus the top five individuals on a non-qualifying team, secured their spot to OFSAA.

Many of the nation’s top runners have come through the Ontario high school system. Others, with impressive high school resumes, only continued running for a short period after high school, or not at all.

Notable past champions in the senior ranks to look out for in 2016 (by no means an exhaustive list)

Mathieu Plamondon (E.S.C. Theriault, Timmins) – The Grade 9 champion in 2013 and the Grade 10 champion in 2014.

Shona McCulloch (Longfields, Ottawa) – The 2014 OFSAA Grade 10 cross-country champion. She also won the Ottawa-region (NCSSAA – National Capital) championship last week. McCulloch defeated 2015 OFSAA junior champion Mei Mei Weston at the Ottawa-region race. McCulloch finished 11th at the World U20 Championships in the 3,000m.

Madeleine Ghazarian (Preston Secondary, Cambridge) – Defending senior champion. Madeleine’s sister, Sevanne, who attends a different high school, is also a contender as she finished just three seconds behind Madeleine at her conference meet (CWOSSA – Central Western).
