Canadian sprinters brought the heat on Day 3 of the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa, especially in the men’s U20 100m final. Tooni Ogunyeye of Brampton, Ont., clocked a blazing 10.23 seconds (0.0 m/s) to break Andre De Grasse’s Canadian U20 record from 2013.
Ogunyeye told Canadian Running in a post-race interview that he’s been working all season toward breaking De Grasse’s record of 10.25 seconds, set 12 years ago. “I kept having little hiccups here and there, but I kept telling myself it was going to come,” said Ogunyeye.

The 19-year-old noted that while the race started well, it wasn’t perfect. “I felt it could’ve been better—I started to fade around 70 metres but told myself to stay relaxed,” he said.
With the win, Ogunyeye edged out his Flying Angels Track Club teammate and Canadian sprint phenom Wyatt Lee, who placed second in 10.41 seconds. Ogunyeye praised Lee’s talent and said he wouldn’t be surprised if Lee broke the record in the coming years.

Ogunyeye is heading into his second year at the University at Albany, with hopes of making the Canadian national team in 2026 and 2027 as he transitions into the senior ranks.
