Despite 30C conditions during the second ever Pan American Cross-Country Cup on Friday, Canadians will be coming home with some hardware thanks to strong individual and team performances.

The race was held in Caracas, Venezuela and featured strong teams from the United States, Mexico, Peru, and Brazil.

Led by a 1-2 finish in the junior women’s 6K, Branna MacDougall and Madeleine Ghazarian led Canada to a gold medal in the team category. The two finished just 0.39 seconds from each other with MacDougall outlasting her teammate in 21:31.33. All five Canadian juniors finished in the top-10 in the women’s 6K.

Showing off her range in the senior women’s 10K, Pan Am Games 1,500m bronze medallist Sasha Gollish added a Pan Am Cross-Country Cup silver medal to her resume running 37:53, 12 seconds back of American Allison Grace Morgan.

There were several DNFs (“did not finish”) in the races, possibly due to the heat. The coach of Julie-Anne Staehli, Steve Boyd, wrote that she was hospitalized after the race from being disoriented and sick to her stomach. Remarkably, she still finished 16th.

In the men’s races, Cameron Linscott was the top Canadian in the junior men’s category, finishing in fourth, just three seconds off the podium. Nicholas Falk, a former University of Windsor Lancer, cracked the top-10 in the senior men’s race finishing tenth in 32:42.30.

Linscott and Ehab El-Sandali, the lone other Canadian junior to finish in the top-10, helped the team win silver, losing out to only the United States. The top four individual athletes score towards an overall team total. The lower the score, the better.

Though the senior men’s team was unable to field a full team (four athletes needed to score), the senior women’s team snagged a podium spot finishing in the top-three with the United States and Peru.

For many athletes, this time of year is a chance to run indoor track but March hosts two international cross-country competitions in which Canada will compete. In addition to the Pan Am XC Cup, Canada will be sending a team to the world university cross-country championships in later this month.
