Potential showdown between Mo Farah and Galen Rupp this fall at Chicago Marathon

Mo Farah has hinted at running the 2018 Chicago Marathon. On Monday, Farah reportedly said he is deciding between Chicago and New York for his fall marathon, but suggested that Chicago is typically a faster event. If Farah does run Chicago, he would compete against former training partner and Nike Oregon Project member, Galen Rupp. 

In October of 2017 Sir Mo Farah split from coach Alberto Salazar, of the Nike Oregon Project. The NOP is a high-performance training group based out of Beaverton, Oregon. 

Farah released a video on social media explaining his decision to leave Salazar. Farah says his decision was simply because he and his family were looking to move back to England.

On the track, Farah is a four-time Olympic Champion, World Champion and six-time European Champion.

Since his retirement from track and field after the 2017 IAAF World Championships, Farah has moved to the roads. He has been very successful there winning the Great Manchester Run 10K two weeks ago, and finishing third in an extremely strong field at the 2018 London Marathon. In London, Farah broke the British Marathon Record running 2:06:32.

Galen Rupp is a former training partner of Farah’s and set to run in Chicago. Rupp is still fairly new to the marathon, but after a strong performance in Prague has solidified himself as an extremely strong competitor in the event. Rupp ran 2:06:07 in Prague, which is also his personal best.

A showdown between the former training partners and track stars would serve as an exciting preview for the Olympic marathon in 2020. Both men have asserted their interest in qualifying for the marathon at the next Olympics.
