Pre-OFSAA cross country meet offers a glimpse of what’s coming

High school athletes got to check out the competition this season at Christie Lake Conservation Area near Hamilton

Ontario high school cross country runners got to sample the competition yesterday at the pre-OFSAA meet near Hamilton, Ont. Hundreds of athletes toed the line at Christie Lake in Dundas, Ont. in cool, muddy conditions to test their legs in advance of the province-wide competition next month, and these were the results.

W. Ross Macdonald School was the only team competing, finishing with 56 points. In individual results, it was Owen Konkle of Beamsville District Secondary (13:02.9), followed by Jacob Balan of St. Marcellinus (13:23.5) and Ryan Sorley of Bishop Ryan (13:13.5).

Midget girls 4K

Collingwood CI was the top midget girls team overall with 95 points. St Annes CSS in Clinton, Ont. was second, with 101 points, and Sir Winston Churchill School of St. Catharines third with 155 points.

In individual results, it was Aysia Maurice of Humberview Collegiate (16:14.5), Katya Vanderberg of Centennial CVI (17:00.8) and Mackenzie Pearce of Holy Trinity (17:02.4) in the top three positions. 

Midget boys 4K

The top three teams were St. Mike’s with 55 points, Neil McNeil with 111, and St. Francis Xavier Secondary with 150. 

In individual results, the top three were Heath McAllister of London Central (14:31.2), Riley Flemington of Appleby College (14:34.3) and Daniel Dimonte of St. Mike’s (15:02.6).

Junior Girls 5K

The top junior girls teams were ESC Theriault (120 points), London Central (159) and Chatham Kent Secondary School (260).

In individual results, the winners were Emily Bryce of Saugeen District Secondary (19:11.0), Jaclyn Keeler of Innisdale Secondary School (19:26.6) and Emma Pegg of Chatham Kent Secondary School (19:54.6).

Junior Boys 5K

In team competition, the winners were Guelph Collegiate with 104 points, Lord Dorchester S.S. (121 points) and St. Mike’s (146).

Individual podium finishers were Eric Campbell of Sir Winston Churchill School (17:15.4), Rudy Saal of CSC Jeanne-Lajoie (17:16.0) and Ethan Aarts of St. Marys DCVI (17:29.8). 

Senior Girls 6K

In team standings, it was Sir John A. Macdonald Waterloo with 150 points, John F. Ross CVI with 178, and ESC Theriault with 219.

In individual competition, Abbey Yuhasz of Resurrection (22:29.9), Petal Palmer of St. Mother Theresa Catholic Academy (22:58.9) and Samara Quanz of Saugeen District Secondary (23:13.8) were the medal winners.

Senior Boys 6K

The top teams were St. Mike’s (117 points), Birchmount Park CI (139 points) and St. Marys HS Kitchener (149).

Top three individual competitors were Foster Malleck of St. Marys HS Kitchener (20:07.8), Santiago Gaetan-Caballero of Notre Dame College School (20:10.6) and Scott Arndt of Waterloo Collegiate Institute (20:33.9).
