Prince Rupert, B.C. woman on a 3-year run streak

The mom of three also helps organize the annual Skeena River Relay, which runs from Prince Rupert to Terrace, B.C.

Bailey Wagner, 40, of Prince Rupert, B.C. is a mom of three who has run every day for the last 1,006 days. Wagner started running shortly after her second son, now 11, was born. She has been hooked ever since. “As a mom, you can have a hard time with scheduling,” she says. “I found running was the easiest exercise to fit into my day. I also love the fact that this sport is a personal-best pursuit. You’re always challenging yourself to do better and achieve more. Running, for me, is the perfect sport.”

On July 29, Wagner’s run streak will hit three years. “It’s become a family affair,” she says. “It started because I read an article about a man in his 70s who’d completed a five-year streak, and I was inspired. But it has since become part of our life, because I do it every day. My husband has come with me at night to make sure I’m safe, and my kids have also joined me for many, many runs. I’m happy to teach them about the importance of movement,” Wagner says. Wagner must run at least 2K each day to keep up the streak.

For Wagner, it’s also important to give back to the running community. She’s president of the Rupert Runners, which has been active for over 20 years. She’s volunteered with them for the past six. “It’s a big year, because we’re racing again. In April we had our first race of the season, where 120 people came out for a half-marathon relay or an 8K race,” she says. Beyond the races, the club also hosts a Learn to Run program for new runners, and a Continue to Run program for those with a little more experience who are looking to return to the sport.

“Coming up this May, we’re hosting a race called the ‘Glory Days’ 5K and 10K,” says Wagner. “It’s a challenging and hilly route. But June is our biggest event of the year–the Skeena River Relay.” The relay is a 142K route from Prince Rupert to Terrace, B.C., broken into 10K or 21K legs. They host up to 30 teams of five to 10 people, and the course is beautiful.

If runners are interested in following along or entering a team, they can find registration through the club’s website and additional information on their Facebook and Instagram pages.
