Toronto Island Run offers trip to Kenya to top finishers

TOIsland

The 2014 Toronto Island Run is set to take place on Sunday, Sept. 7. This year’s event is offering a special prize for the top Canadian male and female 10K finishers: a trip to train in Kenya’s Rift Valley alongside some of the world’s elite runners.

“We consider ourselves very fortunate this year to be able to give away a trip to a training camp in the Rift Valley,” says Island race director Lynn Bourque.  “This prize will be awarded to the first Canadian male and female finishers who also meet the qualifying standard of sub-32 minutes and sub-36 minutes, respectively.” The prize is being donated by the race’s lead sponsor, Quartet Service, Inc., an IT services outsourcing firm.

“Runners are welcome to stay at the training facility for two to six weeks,” says Robert Bracey, president of Quartet Service, Inc.  “For those gearing up for the season in 2015, this will be long enough to get the high altitude training effect.”

The Island Run is among Toronto’s oldest 10K races, celebrating 34 years in 2014. The event consistently sells out with a cap of 1,800 participants.  It is popular with both local and out-of-town families, offers a number of race formats including 10K and 5K races for adults, a 1K kid’s fun run and the Quartet Family 5K relay.

In addition to the races, registered participants are provided with a post-race barbecue. Registration also includes finishers medals, a long sleeved shirt designed by a local artist, a ferry ticket to the island, prize giveaways, age-group awards and prize money for the winners in the adult race categories.
