In her buildup to the Commonwealth Games, Rachel Cliff set a national record in the half-marathon.
The Canadian ran 1:10:08 at the Woodlands Half-Marathon in the city of the same name in Texas on Saturday. The improvement was a huge jump for Cliff as her previous best was 1:11:52, set in January 2018. Pending ratification, her mark improves upon the previous national record of 1:10:47, held by Lanni Marchant, the Canadian women’s marathon record holder.
The Woodlands effort – she won the women’s race – was Cliff’s third half-marathon in the past two months dating back to the Houston Half-Marathon and February’s ‘First Half’ Half-Marathon in Vancouver.

The B.C. Endurance Project member was paced by her husband and 2016 Olympian Chris Winter during the half-marathon. Cliff qualified for Canada to contest the 10,000m at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia at the beginning of April.
Fellow Canadian Calum Neff won the Woodlands Marathon in 2:30:15.
