Incredible footage of the 100m dash at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin has been making round on the internet recently, highlighted by Jesse Owens winning one of his four gold medals at the Games in Germany. The footage was originally posted in 2011.

The American sprinter added the 200m, long jump and 4x100m relay titles to his name in addition to his 100m victory at the 1936 Games.

Owens won the marquee sprint event in 10.3 seconds and tied the Olympic record in the preliminary heats.

Several Canadians were also in the race — and can be seen in the above video (1:06, 1:11 marks) — including Howie McPhee, Bruce Humber and Lee Orr, all sporting the iconic maple leaf.

Sprinters in the early 20th century had to do without starting blocks and were forced to dig holes on the start line. Tracks were also made of cinder which became uneven during rainfall.

Owens became the first U.S. athlete to win four track and field gold medals at a single Olympic Games, a record that stood unbroken for 48 years.
