Streetsville Mile saved for 2019

It’s so fast, if you blink you might miss it: 500 runners took to Streetsville, Ont.’s main drag yesterday for the annual Streetsville Mile, one of the fastest mile races in Canada.
In February, it looked like the race would go the same way as the Bread and Honey 5K and 15K (which were cancelled due to the soaring cost of policing the event), but the local municipality came through, and the race, situated in the northwest corner of Mississauga, went ahead yesterday as planned.

This year’s winners were Kyle Grieve in 4:09.94 and Gladys Tarus in 4:56.52. (Grieve also won the Achilles St. Patrick’s Day 5K, and Tarus was first across the line at Toronto’s Sporting Life 10K three weeks ago.)
Ethan Davenport was second, in 4:10.99, and AJ Bimm was third, in 4:17.01. In the women’s race, Toronto highschooler Jardine Lam-Colling was second (5:04.69) and Somerset Jarvis was third, in 5:10.06.
The mile race used to have a nine-minute cutoff, but that was extended to 12 minutes this year to accommodate more people. But it’s still fast, and the time cutoff is real. The annual Bread and Honey Parade will sweep up any stragglers exactly 15 minutes after the gun.

Finishers’ medals are given to those who finish between nine and 12 minutes, and there are different medals for sub-9 (bronze), sub-8 (silver), sub-7 (gold), sub-6 (platinum) and sub-5 finishers receive a special plaque.
