VIDEO: Batman and Robin put up superhero performances against elites

Michael Kallenberg and Carwyn Jones, dressed as Robin and Batman, respectively, clocked in sub-71-minute performances at the Cardiff half-marathon.

Batman and Robin had quite the showing at the Cardiff half-marathon in Wales on the weekend.

Michael Kallenberg, who was dressed as Robin, and Carwyn Jones, who was in a Batman outfit, both took part in the half-marathon to raise funds for a friend. In the process, the two were running among elite athletes and bettered the previous world record for fastest half-marathon in a superhero costume.

Kallenberg, who is featured in this story’s video, ran 1:09:33 for 21.1K and nearly outkicked an athlete, Belal Ahmed, dressed in regular running attire. The video, posted by BBC Sport Wales, has been seen more than two million times in the span of a day.

“When you dress up as Robin and beat a bunch of elite runners…,” the video caption reads. The finish line clock is a bit deceiving as the official times do not line up with the clock time. Still, a pair of sub-70:30 performances in costumes is impressive.

Kallenberg wore a GoPro strapped to his chest to record footage, which is typically required for Guinness to ratify a world record. Though not captured on film, Kallenberg’s friend who was dressed as Batman finished shortly after in 1:10:45, also under the previous world record of 1:15.

The two were running for Rob Bugden, a British athlete who was involving in a parachuting accident in January 2016. Kallenberg and Jones consider Bugden “a bit of a hero himself” so they figured that running in superhero costumes was fitting.

“If I’m honest, Jones definitely had the bad deal having to wear the batman outfit,” Kallenberg said on Facebook. “If anyone on here works with him, I doubt he’ll be in for a week as he’ll be dealing with heat stroke.”

Kallenberg was the 17th male across the finish line on Sunday while Jones was back in 20th overall. Kallenberg, who was dressed as Robin, also finished third overall at the Welsh Championships, which was held as part of the race on Sunday in the capital.

The race had more than 22,000 registered participants making it the country’s largest half-marathon.
