Despite snow in (almost) April, the women’s race at the 125th running of Around the Bay 30K was won in a blazing fast time. Mengistu Emebet won the women’s event this morning in Hamilton, Ont in 1:45:57, less than a minute and a half off Lanni Marchant’s course record of 1:44:40. Emebt handily won the race, beating second-place finish Dayna Pidhoresky by more than three minutes. In third place was Salome Nyirarukundo of Ottawa in 1:50:03. Nyirarukundo is from Rwanda and ran the Quebec City half-marathon in October 2018 in 1:15:28.
According to Emebet’s race entry, she lives in Mississauga, though she’s from Ethiopia. Sunday wasn’t the first time the runner had raced in Hamilton, as she was third at the 2018 Boxing Day 10-miler. The runner has some pretty impressive road results with a 15:50 5K and 31:40 10K personal bests. Emebet was third at last year’s lululemon Waterfront 10K and third at last year’s Montreal Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, and won her debut half-marathon at Edmonton in August 2018 in 1:11:23.
Rachel Hannah and Krista DuChene were fourth and fifth, in 1:51:43 and 1:56:29. DuChene is running the Boston Marathon in two weeks time.
In the men’s race, Daniel Kemoi and Panuel Mkungo were first and second in 1:32:57 and 1:34:07. Both men are from Coon Rapids, Minnesota. In third place was 2012 Canadian Olympian Dylan Wykes in 1:35:04.
In the 5K, Alex Drover of Kingston took the win in 15:10, followed by Delhonni Nicol-Samuel in 15:11 and Michael Gill in 15:17. In the women’s event, Gladys Tarus was the winner in 17:37, followed by Becky Pieterson in 17:39 and Victoria Seimon in 17:43.
