The Calgary Marathon took place on Sunday, marking the largest race held since the start of the pandemic. Race enthusiasts had the opportunity to choose their distance and return to in-person racing participating in the 50km Ultra, Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, Centaur Subaru 21.1km, Jugo Juice 10km, and GoodLife Fitness 5km Walk & Run. The race is partnered with the Scotiabank Charity Challenge – a fundraising program that provides a simple way for racers to support a local charity of their choice. This year, the race raised over $275,000 for local charities.

This year’s marathon weekend hosted many local athletes from around Western Canada. Calgary’s Justin Kurek crossed the finish line first in 2:33:15, followed by the first female finisher Lauren Barr, with a time of 2:57:09. Kurek is no stranger to the course, he’s run the Calgary Marathon in four of the past five years. In 2017, Kurek finished as the second Canadian, setting a Guinness World Record for fastest marathon in a cowboy suit.

In the 50K Ultra, Canadian six-hour record holder Catrin Jones won the women’s race by almost 15 minutes. In the men’s race, race favourite Jacob Puzey faded to third, as Calgary’s Bow Valley Harriers runner Duncan Marsden won the race in 3:10:52.

“Congratulations to all the finishers who achieved something remarkable today, you are all an inspiration to your community,” says Kirsten Fleming, Executive Director, Run Calgary. “In this most unusual year, it was particularly wonderful to see the run community coming together to support one another in achieving their goals.”

The outdoor event had a limited field size, obeying all provincial regulations set earlier this week. Participants were urged to wear masks inside the corrals that were set up for social distancing. Race amenities included contactless aid stations and grab-and-go self-serve bags at the finish.
