Canada’s top track and field athletes rose to the occasion at Thursday’s Diamond League final in Zurich. Marco Arop and Aaron Brown ran to season’s best performances to finish second on the Diamond League circuit, while Sarah Mitton also took silver in the shot put.

In the men’s 800m, Arop (the 2022 world bronze medallist) made a move with one lap to go. He led into the final straight but was caught by the world and Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir at the line, finishing second in 1:43.38. This was the second fastest 800m time of Arop’s career, behind only his 1:43.26 at the Monaco Diamond League in 2021. The 1,500m world champion, Jake Wightman of the U.K., finished third in 1:44.10. Wightman will headline the prestigious 5th Ave. Mile in NYC this Sunday.

Brown races to season’s bests in 100 and 200m

After reaching the final in both the 100m and 200m at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Brown came to the Diamond League final with the intention to do the sprint double. The 30-year-old sprinter from Toronto finished third in the 100m in 10.06 seconds, then second in the 200m in 20.02 seconds a mere hour later. These are both season’s best performances from Brown, who raced more than 30 times this season.

The 2022 world champion, Noah Lyles, went untouched in the 200m to take the win in a meet record of 19.51 seconds. U.S. sprinter Trayvon Bromell won the 100m title in 9.94 seconds.

Canada’s Andre De Grasse also ran the sprint double, finishing sixth in the 200m and eighth in the 100m.

Mitton caps off a breakout season with shot put silver

On Wednesday evening, Canadian shot-put record holder and Commonwealth champion Mitton capped off a memorable season with a second-place performance of 19.56 metres on the shores of Lake Zurich.
