Hundreds of Canadians toed the line in Berlin on Sunday

Berlin Marathon 2022

While fans may have been glued to Eliud Kipchoge‘s successful new world record at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, along with Ethiopian runner Tigist Assefa‘s remarkable third fastest women’s marathon time ever (in an incredible 19-minute PB), hundreds of Canadians ran the fast, beautiful Berlin course as well. Here’s how the top Canadians finished.

Calum Neff was the first Canadian finisher in 2:21:47. Neff is known for holding three Guinness world records for stroller-running, and is on Canada’s 2022 Mountain and Trail running team heading to Thailand in November for the world championships. Based in Katy, Texas, he paced American athlete Keira D’Amato to her U.S. women’s marathon record and win at the 2022 Houston Marathon; he paced D’Amato in Berlin again yesterday, but nine weeks after her World Championships appearance, she was not able to break her American record (though she did manage a very respectable sixth-place finish in 2:21:48).

Natasha Wodak finished just a few minutes behind Neff to clock a new Canadian women’s record and the second fastest women’s world master’s 40+ time in 2:23:12. Wodak finished 12th in a highly competitive and surprising women’s race. She managed to run negative splits, with her first half taking 72:20 and the second half of her race under 72:00.

Stanley Chaisson of Bear River, P.E.I. was the third Canadian to cross the line, in 2:25:45. Chaisson won the 2022 Fredricton Marathon and set a new course record in 2:29:20, attaining a longtime personal goal of running a sub-2:30:00 marathon (which well exceeded in Berlin).
