The Canadian 5K Championships along with the B&O Yorkville 5K are happening Sunday September 9th in Toronto.

On the women’s side, Canadian indoor mile record holder Kate Van Buskirk leads the field. Van Buskirk had a stellar indoor season, setting a new Canadian record in the mile in 4:26.92. Van Buskirk joked that she wasn’t even aware that she had set the record until roughly 30 minutes after the race. She opened her outdoor season extremely well, running 15:16.34 in the 5,000m at Payton Jordan.

Van Buskirk said post NACAC Championships that she’s looking to get back to her 1,500m roots for the 2019 outdoor season, but until then, she will race on the road this coming weekend in Toronto.

Natasha Wodak is the second seed at 15:39. Wodak was fifth in the Commonwealth Games 10,000m in April. While 15:39 is her fastest time on the road, on the track Wodak ran 15:29.44 in Portland earlier this summer.

Natasha Labeaud is third on the elite list with a road PB of 16:14. LaBeaud has good range and is able to shift from the 1,500m all the way to the marathon.

In the elite race, there’s some serious prize money up for grabs: first place gets $2,500, second place $1,500, third place $1,000, fourth place $500, and fifth place $300.

Tate is a Southern Utah student with a seed time of 13:53. Kent comes in with a seed time of 14:00. Kent doubled at the Canadian National Championships and was fourth in the 5,000m, and tenth in the 1,500m.
