Several Canadian athletes kicked off their 2022 track and field season this past weekend south of the border. One of the top performances came from 19-year-old Toronto sprinter Almond Small, who broke a 30-year-old Canadian U20 200m record, clocking 20.50 seconds in the 200m at the Jo Meaker Classic in Canyon, Texas.

Small is currently running for Barton Community College in Grand Bend, Kan. He not only broke Peter Ogilvie’s U20 Canadian record from 1991 but did so in a wind-legal time, pending official verification. His time was fast enough for second behind West Texas A&M University’s Benjamin Azamati from Ghana, who tied his NCAA Division II record of 20.13 seconds.
Canada’s Jerome Blake stuns favourites over 100m in Bermuda
Jerome Blake pulled off a stunner in the men’s 100m final at the World Athletics Continential Tour stop in Bermuda, clocking a time of 10.38 seconds into a 10/mph headwind (wind -5.6 m/s) to win ahead of the U.S. duo of Erriyon Knighton and Noah Lyles, who finished second and third in 10.39 seconds. Jamaica’s Yohan Blake was fourth in 10.45 and Canada’s Aaron Brown was fifth.
Blanchard kicks off his 2022 season
Montreal’s Mathieu Blanchard kicked off his 2022 trail running season with a second-place finish at the Fogo Vulcan Trail 29km in Cape Verde. The race involves ascending and descending an active volcano. The 35-year-old is training for another run at the podium at UTMB this summer.
