What’s in my race bag: Kim Doerksen

KimDoerksen

Spring races are upon us. Runners gearing up for that big race are going to want to make sure they don’t miss those last-minute details. A general tip for packing your race bag: pack the night before. Are you that person who always has a nagging feeling you forgot something? Here’s what Kim Doerksen (New Balance sponsored runner and last year’s winner at the Vancouver Marathon) packs in her bag. She says she tends to over pack (hey, no shame in being prepared!) but as long as she has these items, she’s good to go!

Here’s what Doerksen packs in her bag:
1. My racing kit which includes my singlet, bummies, sports bra, socks, and some warm-up gear to throw over top.  I’ve been loving all the bright colours companies have this season. The vibrant coral colour Team NB has is fab!
2. My JDS Energy & Mining hat. Any chance I have to showcase my supportive sponsors, I will. This hat protects my head rain or shine.
3. My shoes. My favourite racing flats are the New Balance 1400’s.  They’re bright, light and make me feel speedy from the responsive RevLite sole.
4. My race bib. The one pictured here is my all-time favourite bib from the 2014 BMO Vancouver Marathon, but make sure to pack the bib for the actual race you’re competing in…
5. Sunglasses. I find that these Ryders sunglasses fit really well and don’t bounce around when I’m running.
6. Rehab kit. This includes my mini grid roller, the little green ball for my arches, and Vaseline in case of chaffing or chapped lips.
7. My Garmin Forerunner 920XT.  It’s a multisport race that fits really well as it’s not too bulky considering it’s technology capabilities.
8. Deodorant. This is key if you want anyone to talk to you after the race…
9. Gum. Who doesn’t like having fresh breath when they run?
10. My training journal/agenda.  I have to make sure that I document the pros and cons of races and general recaps so I know how to better myself the next time around.
11. A good book.  I always read the same books before important races.  Again to Carthage by John L. Parker always comes with me when it’s marathon time.
12. Gels. I like the Clif Bar and the Powerbar gels the best.  They have good flavours and are easy to get down the hatch in the middle of a race when I need a little pick-me-up!
