Four college students from Montreal completed their run to Washington, D.C. on Sunday in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. The quartet, known as the White House Runners, ran from Montreal to the capital, a 910-kilometre stretch, in 10 days.

See how the quartet came to the decision to run to Washington, D.C.

The run ended at the White House on July 10. The White House Runners chose Washington, D.C. as the run’s endpoint because they wanted to bring international attention to Terry Fox and the foundation.

Cheez. We made it.

The group of four split the run into a relay. Matthieu Blouin, Akshay Grover, Marc-André Blouin and Aidan Yardley-Jones ran 25K per day with three of them in a support vehicle while the fourth was out running. The team did 100K per day for the first nine days and capped off the trek with 10K on the final day.

As of July 12, the White House Runners have raised $6,985 for the Terry Fox Foundation, named in honour of the Canadian icon who attempted a cross-Canada run in 1980 with a prosthetic leg. Terry Fox made it as far west as Thunder Bay, Ont. after beginning in St. John’s before cancer spread to his lungs. He was 22 when he died on June 28, 1981.

The Terry Fox Foundation supports discovery-based cancer research. Fox has an annual run named after him held across Canada. To date, the foundation has raised more than $700 million for cancer research.

Staff from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. joined the group for the final kilometres of the run and the local Four Seasons hotel put them up for free upon arrival. The final 10K of the run began in Hyattsville, Md. and finished at the White House.

The four teenagers attend John Abbott College and Dawson College in Montreal and met on the Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School cross-country team.

The group’s recap of the final day of the run can be found below.
