Are you looking for your next race weekend getaway? Run alongside Olympians in one of Canada’s fastest races: The Medavie Canadian 5K Championships in Moncton, N.B. on Sept. 11. Since 2014, the Canadian 5K road championships have been held in Toronto. Now, the championship race has made its way to Moncton in the hope of bringing elite-level talent to the east coast.

“This event is the first of its kind in Moncton,” says elite athlete coordinator Stephen Andersen. “We brought this race here to develop the running community in this beautiful city.”

The Moncton Medavie 5K offers an open 5K, kids 1K and the men’s and women’s championship races. Any runner of any calibre can sign up for the open race to experience the feeling of a national championship. There will be prizes for the top age-group runners in the open race, as well as prize money for the top finishers in the championship race.

The standards for the championship race are 15:30 for men and 18:30 for women. Some of the elites announced for the men’s championship race are Canadian 10K champion Ben Flanagan, Lee Wesselius, and Olympians Luc Bruchet and John Gay. The women’s race features a stellar field of four Olympians: Regan Yee, Lindsey Butterworth, Julie-Anne Staehli and Erin Teschuk.

The four races will be live-streamed on YouTube, so friends and family can watch the race for free from across Canada.

The course is an out-and-back loop on Assomption Blvd., which runs along the scenic riverfront in downtown Moncton. The small city of 80,000 is known for its great seafood, live music, and day trips to iconic attractions like the Bay of Fundy and the Confederation Bridge to P.E.I.

If you want something more than 5K, Moncton’s Resurgo Marathon will take place on Saturday morning, starting and finishing in the same place as the 5K. The price for the 5K and the marathon are $45 each, or you can choose to run both for $75.
