Women’s road 5K world record falls in Germany

Sunday was an eventful morning for women’s distance running as Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi shattered the 5 km mark at the adizero Road To Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany, in a winning time of 14:29.

This record was set only six weeks after Teferi finished sixth in the 5,000m at the Olympics. Her time broke the previous record held by Joyciline Jepkosgei by three seconds (14:32).

From the start, Teferi was at the front and pushed the pace, finishing with a 2:52 last kilometre to cross the line in 14:29. This was a women’s only race and her time broke not only the women’s-only record, but also the outright (men’s and women’s field) world record. The previous women-only world record was 14:43, set by Beatrice Chepkoech, earlier this year in Monaco.

Teferi told the media after the race that she was in the best shape of her life. She won by 25 seconds over fellow Ethiopian Melknat Wudu, a double medallist at the 2021 World U20 Championships and only 16 years old. Wudu set a U18 and U20 African record in this race with a time of 14:54.

In the 10K race, another world record was broke as Agnes Tirop from Kenya broke the women’s-only world record in a time of 30:01. This broke the 19-year-old road record held by Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui, who ran 30:29 in 2002 but was suspended for doping in 2004. Tirop is a two-time world championship bronze medallist over 10,000m and placed fourth in Tokyo in the 5,000m.
