World Athletics announces Road Running World Championships
The championships will debut in Latvia in 2023, featuring the road mile, 5K, and half marathon distances

At the first World Athletics Council meeting of 2022, they announced the addition of the road mile to the upcoming World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia in 2023. The mile is the third event added to the competition program for the World Road Running Championships, joining the 5K and half marathon, plus a mass-participation road race for the public.
In its first meeting of the year, the World Athletics Council made a number of significant decisions relating to upcoming World Athletics Series events.

World Athletics Council spoke about the popularity and accessibility of the one-mile race in a press release: “Our goal is to inspire participation and activity through our sport, and the road mile event inspires road runners of all ages and abilities to create a legacy.”
The event will replace the World Half Marathon Championships, starting in 2023. This year’s championships will still be hosted in Yangzhou, China, in November.

The World Road Running Championships will be a two-day event held in Riga, Latvia, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1, 2023, comprising the road mile, 5K and half marathon. There is some speculation in the running community that a road 10K may be added, but it has not been announced.
