U.S. middle-distance star Yared Nuguse has broken another American record, but this time in the indoor mile at the 2023 Millrose Games in New York City. Nuguse ran a mind-blowing 3:47.38, taking the win by two seconds and clocking the second-fastest indoor mile time in history.

The men’s Wanamaker Mile was the spectacle everyone was patiently waiting for at the 2023 Millrose Games, as Nuguse and his On Athletics Club teammates Olli Hoare, 2022 Commonwealth Games 1,500m champ and Mario Garcia Romo (fourth in the 1,500m at the 2022 World Championships) battled it out over eight laps of the historic NYRR Armory Track.

The pace in the men’s mile was set to break the world record of 3:47:01. Nuguse went through the half-mile (800m) in 1:53.8 and closed in 1:53.5 to take the win, beating Hoare, his teammate and 2022 Millrose Wanamaker Mile champion.

Nuguse’s indoor mile record broke Bernard Lagat’s long-standing mark of 3:49.98 from 2008. This record is Nuguse’s second American record of the indoor season; two weeks ago in Boston, he broke the indoor 3,000m record in a staggering 7:28.24. (Nuguse also broke the AR in the indoor 1,500m, at 3:33.22, on his way to breaking the mile record.)

Nuguse currently lives and trains in Boulder, Colo., with On Athletics Club, and specializes in the 1,500 metres. In 2020, he qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in the 1,500m by finishing third at the U.S. trials. He did not participate in Tokyo due to a quad injury.

In the women’s Wanamaker Mile, Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir continued her run of solid performances, taking the win 4:20.15. Canada’s Lucia Stafford capped off her indoor season with three races and three personal bests as she placed fourth in the women’s mile in 4:22.72. Stafford took nearly a second off her PB, set one week ago at the New Balance Grand Prix in Boston, where she placed second.
