Conquering long weekend laziness

long weekend

long weekend

Summer long weekends are a recipe for laziness. Relaxing isn’t a bad thing but when lethargy sets in, it can mean that you’re getting less out of your time off. That won’t happen if you slip in a run though. It can be easy to dismiss physical activity when your daily routine has been disrupted. That’s why we came up with some tips.

Shorten the run. Running for 20 minutes or a half-hour may not be the length that you usually go for but it’s better than nothing. An hour-long run might be difficult to slip in when you’ve got a good book on the beach and you don’t want to miss out on the fun with everyone else either.

Run before a swim. Lounging on the beach is great. So is working up a sweat on a hot summer run and getting the reward of a dunk in the lake afterwards. There’s only so many runs during the year where you get to look forward to this afterwards so don’t waste the opportunity while running at the cottage or cabin.

Get up half an hour before everyone else. That way you’re not missing anything. We’re not saying to set the alarm for 7 a.m. the morning after a late night. Allow a bit of a sleep in so you don’t resent the run.

Plan it into the weekend before you go. As you’re driving to wherever you’re going, pick a time when you will run and plan for it. Maybe the least busy time is Saturday afternoons before the fishing trip. If you have a time in mind, it’s less likely to escape you.

Encourage friends or family members to come. And go at their pace. There’s nothing wrong with making it an easy run especially during summer long weekends. Plus, by doing this, you won’t miss out on any social time. In fact, you might even get a new running partner out of it.
