First day of Spring puts end to excuses not to run

It’s the first day of spring. That dreadful winter that seemed like it was going to last forever is finally over (technically speaking). So, if you’re the runner who prefers not to run through the blasts of arctic air, it’s time to get back into it. Starting today, there are no more excuses. Here’s our primer for how to start fresh for spring:

1. Buy new shoes

Head out to your favourite running shop and pick up a good quality pair of running shoes. Running in the right pair of shoes is essential for every runner. You want to get a fresh start to the season so wearing worn out injury-inducing sneakers is not the way to go. Don’t start off on the wrong… err… shoe.

2. Head to where the runners are

Most runners will say that it’s motivating to see others out on the trails with them. Giving that nod, smile or friendly runner’s wave is a sign of belonging. That will put an extra spring to your step on days where the legs are feeling slow.

3. Make a playlist

Scared of sinking into a rut after the first few weeks? Motivation dwindles for all of us at times. Make a few playlists now to get pumped up. Music is the best way to pass the time when running. Put all your favourite songs on one list and running won’t feel boring.

4. Get rid of gear that’s past it’s due date

Go through the drawer and get rid of the things that you’re just sick of looking at. If you don’t feel good in your gear while you run or if it’s making you uncomfortable, what’s the point?

5. Pick up the pace

With all the snow gone away, you can finally work on your speed. Winter is great for getting in the mileage and priming muscles. Once the snow melts and you don’t have to fight slippery conditions or plow through piles of fresh snow. On dry roads, you can work on speed. Plan your favourite fast workouts now.

6. Add spice to your workout schedule

Maybe this season is time to try something new. What that will be depends on your interests. It could be time to consider hitting up the yoga studio a couple times a week. Maybe you’re sick of solo running and want to find a group this spring. Having something new to look forward to will help you stay in track.

7. Discover a new trail

When you get outside in the warmer weather, you want to appreciate the beauty of the run. Find a new series of trails in your city or town and head to them. You’ll get the most out of your running when you’re in a setting that you love.

8. Make monthly goals

Sit down and think about what you want to achieve by starting up the running again. While many people have one big goal, having several smaller goals along the way will help you stay on track. Set a goal for each month and work to reach it.

9. Design a realistic training program

Plan out your workouts, long runs, easy runs and strength. Put them into the week the same way you would with your work but keep it realistic by considering other things that demand your time. Keeping your weeks consistent helps build and routine. Once you’re used to these new habits, you won’t even think twice about doing it.

10. Splurge on one big item

Rewarding yourself after you’ve done the hard work is one way to go but there’s value to buying yourself a running related gift BEFORE you start training. Here’s why: when you spend money on something, you will commit to using it. So go ahead and splurge on that new GPS watch or jacket you’ve been wanting.
