Have you tried pool running? This is why you should start

Pool running is no-impact, and builds strength and fitness while minimizing any risk of injury

Pool running

Have you ever noticed someone running in the pool and you thought they looked completely ridiculous? Did you wonder why they would run in a pool instead of outdoors? Here’s the truth: pool running is a great form of exercise, especially for an injured runner trying to stay fit while staying off their legs.

Pool running eliminates all impact on your legs, making your body less fatigued after completion. It is well known to aid recovery after a race or hard workout – many athletes will try water running as a means of quicker recovery during a heavy training schedule.

When pool running, your body operates using the same core muscles groups as if you were running outside, but with the added resistance provided by water. If you have sustained an injury and are unable to do high-impact exercises, pool running can be an excellent alternative to build fitness and rehab your injury.

Pool running can also help improve your running form. You can practise driving your knees forward, landing beneath your body, and increasing your cadence. Some athletes have said that after a few pool-running sessions, they have actually run better on land.

Pool running can develop your core strength, as well as muscle tone in your biceps and shoulders, due to the resistance from your underwater arm drives.
