Three tips for running in the rain

What to wear? Is Gore-tex worth it? Here are tips for your rain-related questions

The hardest part of running in the rain is taking that first step outside. Just because it is raining doesn’t mean you should avoid your run. Once you begin running, you might find that you enjoy it. Running in the rain is great for mental training, plus there are ways to dress accordingly to ensure you are prepared.

Running while it’s raining is an underrated way to keep your body cool, as mother nature acts as an air conditioner to keep your body temperature down so you can keep your effort up. Races have rarely been cancelled because of rain, so let’s help you get outside for a wet run with these tips.

Wear appropriate shoes for wet conditions

Don’t wear your new pair of shoes you just bought, save them for a sunny day. It is better to wear old shoes or a water-resistant pair for running in the rain. The best shoes for running in the rain usually feature Gore-Tex material, but it also can depend on what type of running you’re doing. Gore-Tex is a breathable waterproof and windproof fabric inside of a shoe, preventing feet from getting cold or wet. Gore-Tex models can be a great alternative for runners running in the snow or on wet trails.

If your shoes are soaked after your run, an easy and fast way of drying them is to stuff them with crumpled balls of newspaper. This can help your shoes keep their shape and will dry them quickly for your next rainy run.

What to wear for fall running

Wear light and moisture-wicking layers

You can never be overdressed as you can always take a layer off, and the most important layer is the one closest to your body. You will want to make sure you are wearing a moisture-wicking fabric containing quick-dry technology. Wearing clothing that can absorb water and sweat away from your skin will help keep your core temperature up. Your outer layer should be a lightweight wind or water-resistant jacket. If you choose to wear a waterproof jacket, it will trap moisture and heat inside, which can be great in the winter but too warm in the fall or spring. You will want to stay away from cotton (cotton is rotten). Cotton holds water and keeps moisture in.

A hat can also become your friend in the rain. Your running hat will keep the rain off your face and your head and face dry.

Fall safety tips for runners

Avoid running during thunderstorms

Running thunderstorms

While running in the rain is fine, thunderstorms stretch the boundaries. Rain can’t hurt you, but getting struck by lightning can. Don’t take the risk of running outside if there are thunderstorms in the area – it is best to keep your runs indoors.
