Trevor Hofbauer, 25, is doing everything he can to get better, bit by bit, each passing day as he nears the end of year one in his new home

Trevor Hofbauer is all-in to chase his running goals. He quit his job, moved across the country and lives a lifestyle calculated in a way that is geared towards running fast, and far.

Canadian Running visited the 25-year-old in Guelph, Ont., where he is now based, following his win at the 2017 Canadian Marathon Championships, which marked his 42.2K debut. Hofbauer, who previously resided in Calgary, trains under Dave Scott-Thomas with the Speed River Track Club, home of some of the nation’s top distance runners including multiple national team members.

“Life back home was a little more dynamic,” he says describing his long days of travelling as a New Balance. “Here it’s very structured,” he describes his current lifestyle in Guelph.

Hofbauer made the move to Guelph, just outside of the Greater Toronto Area, in early 2017, before the IAAF World Cross-Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda. He suffered a stress fracture shortly after and rested before gearing up for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October, which doubled as the national marathon championships. In our sit-down interview, Hofbauer discusses his emotional 2017 STWM finish, what drives him to compete and offers a brief look at one of the workouts he and the Speed River Track Club did in early December.
