It’s easy to get caught up in complicated workout structures with varying paces, times or distances, and while workouts like this do have a place in your workout program, sometimes it pays to go back to the basics. This 5 x 5-minute broken tempo is a tried-and-true workout that even the pros love, and can easily be adjusted depending on your goals and fitness level.

The workout

This workout is meant to be run at tempo pace, which is a speed you think you can hold for about an hour. It should be fast, but controlled, and you should feel like you could speed up if you had to. This is a great workout for anyone training for distances from the 5K up to the marathon, and as you progress you can increase the length of the intervals to six or even eight minutes if you’re training for a longer race.

Warmup: 10-15 minutes easy jog, followed by form drills and strides.

Workout: 5 x 5 min at tempo pace, with 2 min easy jog between each interval.

Cooldown: 10-15 minutes easy jog, followed by light stretching.
